Navigational Heiau near Mahukona, 2004; North Kohala, Hawaii Island. Hiking up the bluff overlooking Mahukona with my wife, I took several pictures of these “standing stones”. Hawaiian friends explained these massive stones, many nearly the height of a man, were used as navigational teaching aids. This sacred and unusual site is fascinating and rarely visited by tourists.
