“Kalani`opu`u”, 2005,
watercolors and crayons on Arches paper, 26”x20”; is
my imaginary portrait of the aging High Chief of Hawaii and Uncle
of Kamehameha The Great. In his prime, Kalani`opu`u launched several
ambitious but ill-fated invasions of Maui. He was in his sixties
when Captain Cook, in an equally doomed effort, tried to take him
hostage in Kealakakua Bay on February 14, 1779.
